The story
If you have ever been stunned online by a Shanghai panorama you can zoom into endlessly — not only buildings on both banks of the Huangpu River, but license plates in Lujiazui, visitors inside the Shanghai World Financial Center, even fleeting expressions on the street — you have probably already seen this work.
This is BigPixel's 195-Gigapixel Panorama of Shanghai. Since release, this super panorama of the Magic City had surpassed 210 million visits worldwide by 2020. Many outlets covered its visual impact; far fewer explained how 14,160 photographs became one image. Here is the behind-the-scenes story of that extreme shoot.
A national commission for Expo Milano
This was not an ordinary commercial assignment. The panorama was specially created under commission from the Shanghai municipal government, for presenting Shanghai's modern image to the world during Expo Milano 2015.
Its journey went further. During a 2019 European state visit, the image appeared with a Central Propaganda Department exhibition in Rome — Gigapixel Views of China — offering an ultra-clear calling card of the city. For a presentation of that weight, image quality and viewpoint allowed no compromise.
The best vantage: outdoors on the sixth sphere
To find a viewpoint that perfectly overlooks the Huangpu core, the team climbed the Oriental Pearl Tower three times for site surveys and shooting plans.
Many assume the shoot happened on the familiar transparent tourist decks of the main spheres. It did not. Shooting through glass creates severe reflections incompatible with gigapixel standards. The final position was the outdoor platform of the sixth sphere, about 230 meters up. Wind and height were the hardest challenges — but with no visual obstruction, it was the ideal place to capture this frame.
Racing the sun: 14,160 shutter clicks
Building a 195-gigapixel panorama is an enormous workload. Three camera positions were set along the tower, each covering about 160 degrees of matrix photography. From 8 AM to 3 PM, the shutter fired 14,160 times.
Light is the hardest variable in panorama work. For the clearest, most dimensional look, the team avoided city backlight and shot with the sun. In the morning, with the sun in the east, they photographed western cityscapes first; in the afternoon they turned to the east. It was a test of stamina and of reading light in advance.
Three giant fans, fused into one
Those 14,160 frames were only the beginning. Back in the studio, the heavier post-production began.
- Matrix processing: organizing, initial color correction, and defect repair across thousands of frames.
- Fan stitching: assembling each position's thousands of images into three enormous fan-shaped matrices.
- Seamless fusion: merging the three fans — with slight perspective and time differences — through algorithms and manual refinement into one complete 360-degree Shanghai panorama.
Easter eggs inside 195 gigapixels
The extreme clarity turned the photograph into a vivid historical record of Shanghai around 2014–2015. Zoom in and you can find:
