If the Oriental Pearl's 195-gigapixel panorama once put you inside the city, this time we take you to China's tallest building — Level 118 of Shanghai Tower at 546 meters — for a grander reading of the megacity.
At 45 gigapixels, the number does not match the Oriental Pearl's 195. What it achieves instead is something rare: one image that holds an entire city. Before you pan and zoom, here are four secrets behind the frame.
Ultimate reach across the metropolis
Only from high enough can you see the city's outline. From 546 meters, the span is unprecedented. From busy Lujiazui downtown, the view extends west toward the Hongqiao hub, east toward Pudong International Airport, north to Baoshan's container terminals, and south to the edge of Fengxian New City.
The full frame covers about 1,000 square kilometers of Shanghai — urban fabric laid out in a single panorama.
After the typhoon: Shanghai at its clearest
Gigapixel photography lives and dies by weather. The team waited for Shanghai's most transparent day — and caught it just after a typhoon passed.
No haze, no dust, washed-clean sky. What you see now is one of the city's clearest and most vivid moments.
Racing the sun: no backlight allowed
Buildings lose color and detail in backlight. To keep every direction at its best, the team tracked the sun continuously and adjusted shooting order with the light, avoiding the city's backlit faces.
Wherever you turn in the panorama, architecture appears full and dimensional under light.
Extreme difficulty: shooting through glass
This may be one of BigPixel's hardest technical shoots. During the typhoon period, outdoor capture like the Oriental Pearl project was impossible. Every matrix frame had to be taken through the fully enclosed curtain wall on Level 118.
At hundreds of meters up, the team fought severe double-glazing reflections and optical distortion from curved glass edges. Far more effort than usual went into on-site setup and algorithmic correction — until the city came through the glass onto your screen.

Because the panorama was photographed from the observation deck at the top of Shanghai Tower itself. The building disappears beneath the camera position, allowing viewers to look outward across the entire city instead of back toward the tower.

On a clear day, this panorama covers about 1,000 square kilometers of Shanghai at city-wide scale — toward Hongqiao Airport to the west and Pudong Airport to the east, from the Baoshan waterfront in the north toward high-rises in Fengxian to the south.
